Interconnection Is the Part Most Homes Get Wrong
A standalone alarm only warns the room it is in. Interconnected alarms all sound together, so a fire starting in the garage wakes the bedroom at the far end of the house at the same moment. That difference in warning time is why the residential code has required interconnected, hardwired alarms with battery backup in new dwellings for decades. Hardwired interconnection carries a third conductor between units, typically 14/3 cable. Where fishing that wire means opening ceilings, wireless-interconnect alarms reach the same result over a radio link.
Hardwired With Battery Backup, or 10-Year Sealed Battery?
Both are legitimate. The choice comes down to what is already in the ceiling.
Hardwired with battery backup
The alarm runs on a 120-volt branch circuit and falls back to its onboard battery the moment power drops, which during storm season here is not a hypothetical. That circuit usually lands on an AFCI breaker, since NEC 210.12 covers the bedroom and hallway outlets these alarms sit on. It is the standard for new construction and for any home with the ceilings already open.
10-year sealed battery
No wiring to run, no nine-volt cell to fish out at 3 a.m., no annual battery ritual to forget. The lithium cell is sealed for the life of the unit, and the whole alarm is replaced at ten years. Florida’s rules for existing homes push replacement battery-only alarms toward sealed 10-year units. They often suit a 1970s Boynton Beach ranch with plaster ceilings and no alarm wiring in them.
Photoelectric vs. Ionization Sensing
The two technologies see different fires. Photoelectric sensors respond faster to smoldering fires: a cigarette in upholstery, an overheating cord inside a wall, a mattress. That is the fire that fills a house with smoke while everyone sleeps. Ionization sensors respond faster to fast-flaming fires like a grease flare-up, and they are the ones that shriek when you sear something, which is why they get pulled down and never reinstalled. Where Smoke Alarms Belong
Placement follows NFPA 72 and the residential code, and it is where most retrofits quietly go wrong.
- Inside every bedroom, on the ceiling wherever framing allows
- Outside each separate sleeping area, in the hallway serving those bedrooms
- On every level. In Florida that usually means the main floor plus a second story, since basements are rare here
- Within roughly 21 feet of any point in a hallway, so a long corridor needs more than one
- On the ceiling at least 4 inches in from the wall, or on the wall 4 to 12 inches down
- On a cathedral ceiling, near the peak but not in the dead air at the apex
Where an Alarm Should Never Go
- Within 10 feet of a cooking appliance. Where an open plan forces it closer, use a photoelectric unit with a hush button
- In a bathroom or directly outside one, where shower steam reads as smoke
- Within about 3 feet of an HVAC supply register or a fan blade, where moving air sweeps smoke past the sensor
- In an unconditioned garage or attic. A Florida attic in August sits far outside the roughly 40 to 100 degree range these devices are listed for
- In the dead-air corner where wall meets ceiling, or beside a door that drafts
Carbon Monoxide Alarms in a Mostly Electric State
Plenty of homes here are all-electric, which leads people to file carbon monoxide under somebody else’s problem. The sources that matter in Palm Beach County are a gas range or water heater, a gas pool heater, an attached garage, and portable generators run too close to the house after a storm. Put a CO alarm outside each separate sleeping area and on every level. Keep it 10 feet or more horizontally from any fuel-burning appliance, since normal ignition releases a puff of CO that will nuisance-trip an alarm mounted on top of it. If your garage is attached, an alarm near the door between garage and house is the highest-value placement in the building. CO mixes fairly evenly with room air, so height matters less than the manufacturer’s listed instructions. If you run backup power, that argues for a standby generator or a properly installed generator inlet and interlock rather than a cord through a window.
Alarms Expire, and the Date Is on the Back
Smoke alarms are finished at ten years from the manufacture date stamped on the back, not from the day the unit went up on your ceiling. One that sat in a warehouse for two years is an eight-year alarm. CO sensors run shorter, commonly five to ten years by model, and many combination units announce their own end of life with a chirp homeowners mistake for a low battery. Coastal homes in Juno Beach and Jupiter Island have a second problem: salt air and humidity are hard on sensing chambers and contacts. During an electrical safety inspection we read the dates off every alarm and tell you which are past due.
What a Rewire or Renovation Triggers
Alarm requirements ride along with permitted work. Pull a permit for an alteration, repair, or addition and the code generally requires the home’s smoke alarms to be brought up to the new-construction standard: one inside every bedroom, one outside each sleeping area, one per level. Add a bedroom, and that bedroom needs an alarm. The practical relief is that hardwiring and interconnection are not demanded when no wall or ceiling finish is being removed, so battery alarms are accepted then. A whole-home rewire removes that exception, because the ceilings are open and the interconnect wire can actually be run. Each Palm Beach County municipality runs its own building department, and alarm work is inspected with the rest of the permit, the same as an electrical panel upgrade.
Detector Questions
Why does one alarm chirp at night and stop by morning?
Battery voltage sags as the house cools overnight, enough to drop a marginal cell below the alarm’s threshold. It is a genuine warning, not a glitch. If the unit is hardwired and the chirp continues after a fresh backup battery, the alarm itself has reached end of life.
Can new alarms be interconnected with the ones already in my ceiling?
Only within the same manufacturer’s family, and often not even across generations of one brand. Mixing brands on a single interconnect wire is a common cause of alarms that sound at random or never sound together. When we retrofit, we replace the full set.
Do I need a CO alarm if my house is all-electric?
With no fuel-burning appliance and no attached garage, the code generally does not require one. We still suggest one outside the sleeping area if you own a portable generator, because storm-season carbon monoxide exposure here comes from outside the house more often than inside it.
