A hot tub gets delivered on a Friday and the family wants it running Saturday. The electrical side is usually where that timeline breaks, because pool and spa work is held to the strictest rules in the code. Pool and spa work lives under NEC Article 680, and water is why: wet skin has a fraction of the resistance of dry skin. Article 680 answers that with three layers that have to work together: ground-fault protection, a reachable disconnect, and equipotential bonding.
Dedicated GFCI-Protected Circuits
A spa or hot tub gets its own circuit, sized from the unit’s nameplate rather than a rule of thumb. Most built-in models land on a 240-volt circuit, commonly 50 amps. Plug-in 120-volt models still need a dedicated receptacle.
NEC 680.44 requires GFCI protection on the outlet supplying a self-contained or field-assembled spa, and 680.21(C) does the same for pool pump motors on 15- and 20-amp circuits. We usually set that with a spa disconnect panel with the GFCI built in, putting the reset a few steps from the tub instead of in the garage.
The Disconnect: Distance and Line of Sight
NEC 680.13 calls for a disconnecting means that opens all ungrounded conductors serving pool and spa equipment: readily accessible, within sight of the equipment it controls, and at least 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls of the water, unless a permanent barrier stretches the reach path to 5 feet or more.
“Within sight” is a defined term: visible from the equipment and not more than 50 feet away. The 5-foot rule exists so nobody leans out over the water to kill power. The defect we most often correct is a disconnect on the nearest wall, three or four feet from the shell.
Equipotential Bonding: The Part That Actually Saves People
Bonding and grounding are different jobs and get confused constantly. Grounding gives fault current a path back to the panel so a breaker opens. Bonding ties every conductive thing in and around the water together so they all sit at the same electrical potential. A person is only shocked by a difference in potential, and equipotential bonding removes the difference.
That is why bonding, not the breaker, is the single most safety-critical part of a pool or spa installation. Stray voltage from a failing pump, a nicked underground conductor, or utility equipment down the street can put a couple of volts on a metal ladder. Grounding will not necessarily clear that, because a couple of volts trips nothing. A correct bonding grid makes it harmless.
What NEC 680.26 requires us to bond
- The shell, including the structural reinforcing steel in a gunite pool.
- The perimeter surface, out 3 feet horizontally from the inside walls, paved or unpaved. The conductor runs 18 to 24 inches from the wall and 4 to 6 inches below subgrade.
- Metal fittings: ladders, handrail anchors, diving board bases, and the forming shells behind niche lights.
- Pool equipment: pump motors, heaters, and metal wiring methods and fixed metal parts within 5 feet of the inside wall.
- The water itself, through at least 9 square inches of conductive surface in contact with it. A ladder or handrail often satisfies this; otherwise we install a bonding plate at the pad.
The bonding conductor is 8 AWG solid copper, and connections in the ground must be listed for direct burial. Sequence matters too: the perimeter bond is inspected before the deck is poured, and once concrete is down, correcting it means breaking it up. Pump, Heater, and Salt Cell Circuits
- Pump. Its own circuit, GFCI protected, sized to the motor. Variable-speed pumps are electronic drives and behave differently with ground-fault protection than old single-speed motors did.
- Heater. Heat pump pool heaters are the common choice here and get sized from the nameplate minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent device. Electric resistance heaters draw considerably more.
- Salt cell. A small load, but its power supply is an electronics box. Keep it out of direct spray and off the sun-baked side of the pad.
Equipment wiring runs in an approved raceway, most often rigid PVC, and NEC 680.10 governs what may be buried within 5 feet of the pool wall. If the pad pushes an older 150-amp service to its limit, expect a load calculation and sometimes an electrical panel upgrade.
Pool, Spa, and Landscape Lighting
Underwater lighting falls under NEC 680.23. Most residential pools now use low-voltage LED fixtures fed from a transformer listed for pool and spa use, an isolating type with a grounded metal barrier between primary and secondary windings. A generic landscape transformer is not a substitute, and fixtures above 15 volts need ground-fault protection.
Swapping a decades-old 120-volt wet-niche fixture for LED is a frequent call, and it is the moment to check the bonding lug on the forming shell, the cord seal, and whether the niche has been taking on water. Deck and landscape lighting is usually a low-voltage system under NEC Article 411, on a GFCI-protected circuit, and it still respects the clearance rules in 680.22 near the water. Salt Air, Sun, and Outdoor Equipment
Pool equipment sits in salt aerosol year round. Plain steel screws give up in a season, bare aluminum enclosures pit and chalk, and salt-water pools give the pad an extra dose. For coastal installs we use non-metallic or stainless enclosures, corrosion-resistant fasteners, PVC raceway on exposed runs, in-use covers on outdoor receptacles, and antioxidant compound on aluminum terminations.
Corrosion is a bonding problem too: a connection that has corroded through is an open bond, invisible until the day it matters. We test bonding continuity on older pools rather than assume, which is also why an electrical safety inspection is worth doing on a pool you inherited with the house. Variable-speed drives and salt cells are surge-sensitive, making whole-house surge protection a sensible pairing.
Permits and Inspection in Palm Beach County
Pool and spa electrical is permitted, inspected work everywhere we operate. A new pool typically has two inspection points: bonding and rough wiring before the deck is poured, then a final once equipment is set. A hot tub on an existing patio is a shorter path, but still a permit. We pull it, coordinate the bonding inspection against the pool contractor’s pour schedule, and meet the inspector.
Common questions
Can I wire a hot tub myself? Hot tub circuits are permitted, inspected work in Florida. The two things that most often go wrong on a self-installed tub, bonding continuity and disconnect placement, are also the two you cannot verify by looking at the finished job.
My hot tub GFCI keeps tripping. Is the breaker bad? Occasionally, but treat a repeating trip as information. The usual causes are a heater element leaking to ground, water in a junction box or bonding lug, or a failing pump motor. A larger breaker removes the warning without fixing anything.
Does a plug-in or above-ground hot tub still need bonding? It still falls under NEC Article 680. A listed self-contained unit has its internal metal parts bonded at the factory, but the perimeter surface around it and metal within reach of the water remain a field responsibility.
